Most people, when they hear that Canada, has some of the best dive sites, will just shake their head in disbelief and look at us like we’re crazy. What is it about the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador that makes them so special?
It is in this region that the Arctic waters of Labrador, carrying vast quantities of plankton, mix with the warm Gulf Stream, the Gulf Stream. It is this abundance of food that attracts some of the most unusual creatures on the planet, such as Humbacks, White Whales and Narwhals.
In addition to these giant mammals, at the bottom of the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador, we will also find some of the most interesting vessels, sunk here during the Second World War. In fact, in the area there are nearly 10 thousand wrecks! Conception Bay, in its depths retained forever four huge transport ships (Canadian SS Lord Strathcona, SS Rose Castle, British Saganaga and French PLM27) with iron ore, sent to its bottom by a group of German U-Boats in 1942. Superbly preserved by local waters, they rest on their keels about 3km from the coastline. The excellent visibility of 25-30m, the richness of the marine fauna, the easy access and the excellent condition they are in make this one of the most interesting wreck diving sites in the world.
But for those who want to see the largest mammals on Earth, and even have the opportunity to dive among them, there is perhaps no better place. It is hard to imagine more favourable conditions to encounter such a large number of Humbacks or elusive Narwhals, as they stay in the area from June for 3 months to feed. Local companies even offer special snoorking trips with the whales, as the blubber from the vending machine, can very easily frighten them away. White whales, are found much less frequently and are usually juveniles, swimming in the company of larger Humbacks.
Narwhals, with their distinctive horns, are perhaps one of the rarest of whales, while at the same time they are the biggest attraction of the local waters. These Arctic creatures travel south only in summer and no further than Conception Bay. This makes an encounter with them something very special, and anyone who has had the opportunity can speak of being very lucky. However, many local photographers and filmmakers have tracked down these unusual creatures, gathering interesting multimedia material.
I suspect that some of you, after getting to know what the cold waters of distant Canada have to offer, will feel surprised, and there will probably be even more of you who will begin to seriously consider the possibility of visiting Newfoundland and Labrador. I am not surprised at all, because it is really worth it.
