The diving community is full of inventive people with imagination and original ideas. We often hear about unusual and often funny actions and happenings organised by diving centres and clubs, from common cleaning of reservoirs, to unusual celebrations and celebration of various events. All amateurs diving in Florida have something completely out of the ordinary, however. A music festival… underwater! As if that wasn’t enough it has been organised for over a quarter of a century!

The upcoming 27th edition of the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival will take place on July 9, at Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. About 600 divers participate in this unusual event each year! The festival takes place about 10km south of Big Pine Key and is a celebration of sorts, representing the diversity of underwater life in the surrounding waters.

Most of the music is played from special speakers, lowered into the water from the boat and surprisingly… the music sounds pretty good! Those who intend to take part but don’t have their own boat can take advantage of the dive centres and private charters in the area.

A one-of-a-kind Underwater Music Festival, brings divers and snoorklers together for fun and conservation efforts the only coral reef in North America. In addition to the music, the festival also features broadcasts recorded by officials from the Florida Keys Nationa Marine Sanctuary on ways and tips on how to admire and explore the reefs without having a harmful impact on the marine environment.

Below is a video from last year’s 26th edition of the festival:
