The 2014 AIDA Freediving World Championships will take place from 16-26 September and the International Association for the Advancement of Apnea Diving has just finished voting on which venue should host the Freediving World Championships. The winner was Cagliari, located in the south of Italy. The capital of Sardinia, home to one of the largest ports on the Mediterranean, has excellent conditions to host such an event.

The AIDA Association began in 1992. It was founded by a group of doctors, technicians, divers and apnea divers whose aim was to regulate and standardise world records in freediving. Today, it is the largest organisation in the world dedicated to the sport, organising competitions, overseeing safety standards, paving the way for freediving education, and uniting apneic divers.

Last year, the title of World Champion went to Alexei Molchanov, the son of the Tsarina of freediving – Natalia Molchanova. The Russian freediver, known for his technique and physical strength, reached a depth of 128m in a fixed ballast. The official dive time was 3min and 38s. Among women the winner of this competition was… Natalia Molchanova, of course, reaching the depth of 91m.
