Based on the findings they have made so far, they are planning another expedition. From April 4-14, the group will start an exploration expedition in the Greek Peloponnese. The goal of their expedition is the still unexplored Drakos-Selinitsa-System cave system.

Cave divers first discovered the Drakos-Selinitsa-System in 1983. Interestingly, it has been virtually unvisited since then. In September 2021, during a reconnaissance expedition to Greek caves, Sabina “Sabi” Zapiór and a team of experienced cave divers found the exit of the complex cavern system and located an old guideline. It is worth noting here that this art did not succeed for several Greek teams, with whom they consulted their dives in Greece.

Expedition to Drakos-Selinitsa-System 2022

The plan prepared for the April expedition by the Polish team consisting of: Sabina “Sabi” Zapiór, Michał Misio Kobylarz and Andrzej, with the support of Greek colleagues, assumes full exploration of the first 250 m and the cavern system. On the existing plan of the cave, only the main route along the handrail and larger side passages are marked. However, the system is very extensive and the team wants to explore all side branches. Another objective the expedition members have set themselves is to measure the distances between the various points and to create an accurate plan that will include navigational figures.

We also want to repair the main guideline, which is currently in a residual state. In the side passages, we plan to lay jump ropes as far as possible. Then we will try to get as far into the cave as possible. We want to explore the possibility of making a traverse to the dry part, which can be explored from the heights of Katafigio Village. Sabina Zapiór explains

The cave is large, complex to navigate and extremely beautiful. According to the participants of the expedition, if they manage to put the guidelines in order and create a proper plan, this place should become a must for every cave diver.

Our aim is also to popularise the Greek caves, which are not inferior to those in France or Italy. As they are far away, divers from Europe hardly ever visit them, which certainly works in their favour. said Sabi

Diving in a Greek cave Results of the Drakos-Selinitsa-System 2022 expedition

We will write more about the results of the expedition and the Drakos-Selinitsa-System in an upcoming issue of DIVERS24 magazine. In the article the participants of the expedition will also talk about the famous cavities worth diving in the area from Athens to Sparta. There will also be information about interesting cave systems that are located on islands near Athens.

We’re not talking about some narrow speleo-holes, but about beautiful, wide caves that will knock you off your feet! These places should become permanent items on active cave divers’ lists. adds Sabi.
