Bottlenose dolphins have returned to Finland after 70 years!

In recent months, we have been receiving news from many parts of Europe and around the world of yet another wildlife recovery. The latest news is that several bottlenose dolphins have been sighted in Finnish waters for the first time in 70 years!

Dolphins were spotted last Wednesday, in the South West. During the midday hours, Dalsbruk residents who were on a boat spotted the creatures in the water, which seemed to spend their time having fun, disappearing under the surface every now and then.

Fortunately, it is not difficult to get a camera these days and the unusual visitors were able to be captured on camera. The Turunmaa Fishermen’s Association was then contacted and Kaj Marttsson provided his expert assistance.

“At first we thought we were dealing with porpoises. However, after a more careful analysis of the photos, we came to the conclusion that this was a misleading lead, as the animals in the photos are larger in size than porpoises.”

To get an expert opinion it was decided to contact the staff at Särkänniemi Dolphinarium. The staff there had no doubts and immediately identified the animals from the photos as a family of Bottlenose (one larger and two smaller individuals).

While every sign of nature reviving and animal species returning to certain areas after years, sometimes decades, of absence should make us happy, what should sadden us is the fact that the key element linking all these returns is the absence of… humans.
