Croatian media reported a dangerous find made by Velimir Vrzic while diving near Rijeka. The man came across an 80-year-old naval mine, which rests sunk in the sea bed, adjacent to a nearby beach. The World War II artefact was discovered at the end of January, but for security reasons, the whole case was kept secret until now.

According to the information available, the mine is a remnant of the recent global conflict and lies partially buried in the seabed, at a depth of 25 metres, literally right on the coastline near Rijeka, in north-western Croatia.

Velimir Vrzic, who made the dangerous find, was not particularly surprised by his discovery. German troops were stationed in the region during World War II and the surrounding waters are still full of various artefacts from that period.

Among other things, the obstacles in the form of sea mines, such as the one found, protected the coast during the war against the landing of allied troops. Closer inspection determined that the mine found was a German-made EMC II model, available in 6 variants, containing 100 to 150 kg of TNT. Such a powerful charge is capable of sinking a large vessel.
