The wreck of a British World War II submarine, HMS Tarpon, has been found in the waters of the North Sea near the Jutland Peninsula. The vessel was located and identified in Danish waters, near the fishing port of Thyborøn, and was done by professional diver Gert Normann working for JD Contractors.

The ship HMS Tarpon left Portsmouth harbour on 5 April 1940 with orders to proceed towards Norway. On 10 April the crew received orders to take up a new position, but were never contacted again.

After the war, German records established that HMS Tarpon attacked the Q-ship Schiff 40/Schürbek, but the first series of torpedoes missed the target. In response, a counterattack was launched, which resulted in the submarine being sunk. 59 crew members were killed. The explosion just off the starboard side of the kiosk proved to be the most deadly for the Tarpon.

The wreck of the Royal Navy submarine was found by accident, during work related to other searches (unfortunately we do not know what they are about – ed)

“This is an extraordinary find and so close to Jutland. It is a very special feeling to see the wreck of a submarine after it met such a tragic end.” – Gert Normann said in an interview with the daily Jyllands-Posten.

In the same interview, Normann stated that there are many records with the locations of submarine wrecks sunk during World War II and beyond, but most of them are very inaccurate and can often be misleading. This is also the case here, where reports say the wreck of HMS Tarpon should lie in the deep waters of the Skagerrak, definitely closer to Norway.

The wreck has of course been declared a war grave and any unauthorised diving and exploration of the vessel is prohibited.
