A group of scientists from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences carried out a reconnaissance of the chemical weapons ammunition dumped in Baltic waters by the Allies after World War II. The expedition, which lasted two weeks, was carried out in the Bornholm and Gdansk Deeps using the research vessel Oceania.

In addition to sampling materials of interest to scientists, a torpedo was accidentally found, the origin of which, after closer examination, has been determined to be in the 1940s. Unfortunately, due to poor visibility, the recorded photo and video materials are not of the best quality and do not reflect the full scale of the find.

“We went to areas where we expected to find dumped munitions. We also had coordinates from previous expeditions, mainly the Gdansk Deep and the Bornholm Deep,” says Jacek Bełdowski, Ph. – says Dr Jacek Bełdowski from the Institute of Oceanology at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The aim was to investigate the potential and condition of the sunken arsenal. Among the priorities, aerial bombs and the infamous iperite were of greatest interest to the researchers.

“We found several places where there were objects resembling sunken aerial bombs, near one of them in a sediment sample we detected iperite, already on board we conducted analyses, ” Dr Beldowski added.

In the next parts of the expedition and during subsequent voyages conducted as part of the ‘Daimon’ project, the researchers will try to come up with a way to secure and neutralise the threat posed by the deteriorating condition of the sunken arsenal.
