Swedish divers have announced that the wreck of the famous 17th century warship “Solen” has been found. The discovery near Karlskrona was made by underwater archaeologists from the Maritime Museum in Stockholm.

Interestingly, the wreck was found at a depth of just 6 metres! The area where the discovery was made is likely the resting place of several other war wrecks. We can therefore be sure that this is not the last find in the Karlskrona area.

In its time the Solen was one of the largest warships sailing the Baltic Sea. She became famous during the sea battle near Öland, where a confrontation between the fleets of Sweden and Denmark and Holland took place in 1676. It was intentionally sunk in 1694.

Solen was built in 1669 in the shipyard in Lübeck. The ship was equipped with 72 cannons, which was more than the legendary and unlucky Vasa, built in 1628, which, although it had two decks of guns, only had 64 in total.

Certainly, both ships will not ultimately share the same fate and the Solen will not be excavated. The Vasa example has shown that it is possible, and the results can be breathtaking (the Vasa museum is one of the most popular historical museums in the world), but the costs of such an undertaking and subsequent maintenance are too high.
