The Thai island of Ko Tao is only 12 km² in size and attracts over 400,000 tourists from all over the world every year. As you can imagine, these numbers are very unfavourable for the local flora and fauna, which are simply devastated and disappearing before your very eyes.

The site chosen for the sculpture was a location that was recently devastated by a fishing boat that sank in the area. This accident resulted in the destruction of almost 600 m² of coral reef.

“My sculpture is just a small part of what we are trying to do here on Ko Tao. I just thought I could additionally use my passion and talent to create something to bring people’s attention to the problems facing the ecosystem here,” – explains the artist.

In creating his sculpture, Arnold immortalised the faces of the people with whom he fights every day to protect life in the waters surrounding Ko Tao. The New Heaven Reef Conservation project has been running for seven years.

“For me it is a powerful image depicting my personal relationship with despair, having spent the better part of my life admiring the beauty of our planet and at the same time being appalled by the course humanity has taken and the destruction we have wrought in a very short time,” Arnold said.
