British diver Sean McGahern has broken the world record for the longest open-circuit dive in warm, salty water, where he spent 49 hours and 56 minutes on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Malta.

With this feat, the previous world record was broken, set in 2010 by Will Goodman, who spent 48 hours and 9 minutes underwater.

While underwater, the diver not only drank, ate and relaxed, but also decided to use the time usefully to clean up the bay. The bottles and other finds were brought to the surface by a team of divers from Sean’s team and St John’s Rescue Corps.

The record attempt was not helped by the capricious weather. Strong, gusty wind and high waves were an additional challenge. The success achieved in such conditions certainly gave Sean a lot of satisfaction, as the new record holder, despite being exhausted, came out of the water smiling and willing to joke.

Sean also holds another world record for ice water diving, which we wrote last year
