“Diving into the unknown” tells the story of divers who return to Norway’s Plura cave after a tragic accident. Their goal is to retrieve the bodies of their friends who died while exploring the cave. Those who managed to survive the tragic plunge decide to put their lives on the line to bring the bodies of their friends to the surface. This is how the filmmakers heralded their documentary, arousing huge interest in the international diving community.

The Scandinavian production is a documentary film describing the return to the site of a tragic dive, where the lives of a group of friends changed forever. For some it was the end of it, and for those who were lucky and survived, the turning point and one of the most tragic experiences of their diving careers. Now they are returning to collect the bodies of their friends to take them on their final journey home.

The mission to recover the bodies of the two divers, which proved too risky for the rescue services and the police to carry out at all, now rests on the shoulders of those who care most – the colleagues and friends who took part in the fatal dive.

Despite the ban, they set off in secret to the Norwegian cave Plura. They want to get to the clamp located at a depth of 110 metres to reach the bodies of their comrades. The emotional burden is the heaviest we can imagine, but also the motivation and conviction of the whole action are unquestionable, and no one even assumes that one can do otherwise. The goal must be achieved.

The entire footage is a compilation of what was captured by the divers’ GoPro cameras, drones and professional film equipment. Magnificent frames and breathtaking POV(point of view – the view from the perspective of the person holding the camera – ed.) shots create an unusual mixture, wonderfully conveying the silence, darkness and claustrophobic atmosphere of diving in an overhead environment.

Let’s remember that the target depth is 110 metres. In such conditions, recording photo/video material of the highest quality is a real art, especially when we consider what the purpose of the dive was.

The film already premiered in Finland on 19 February 2016. Since then, the documentary has been very well received in more countries in Europe and North America, gaining recognition and favourable reviews at many film festivals.
