A new and very interesting site has recently appeared on the web. We are talking about the long awaited and already announced website of the Virtual Wreck Museum of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It is a project, some of whose elements we could already find(digitalized individual shipwrecks). Today, it is finally available in all its glory and we can expect that in the future, together with the progress of the works, it will increase the number of resources made available.
The whole project was created by the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk and at the moment the virtual open-air museum gives us the opportunity to get acquainted with the wrecks of six vessels. Among them, the greatest attraction because of its historical importance is the wreck of the famous Swedish the “Solen” galleonwhich was sunk in 1627 during the Battle of Oliwa. However, the other five wrecks are also worth paying a bit of attention to. They are the “Glazik”, the “Loreley”, the “Porcelanowiec”, the “Portowiec” and the wreck of the sailing ship F53.5 (W-21).
News
In 2015, the NMM started the implementation of the project “Virtual Open Air Wreck Museum of the Gulf of Gdansk”, funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. One of the results of this work has just been created a website that features 3D models of shipwrecks from the Gulf of Gdansk with their descriptions and additional documentation.
By the end of 2016, 13 underwater archaeological objects from the Gulf of Gdansk are to appear in the “Virtual Open Air Museum”. In turn, in the following years the “open-air museum” is to be systematically enriched with More 3D models.
All shipwrecks presented in the “Virtual Wreck Museum of the Gulf of Gdansk” are covered by legal protection. The sites are located in a basin (sea area) administered by the Maritime Office in Gdynia. Diving on them requires permission from the Maritime Office in Gdynia.
About the project
The presented models of shipwrecks are a faithful reproduction of the real appearance of these objects lying on the bottom of the Gulf of Gdańsk. This is how underwater archaeologists see them during their work – with the difference that low water transparency usually does not allow to see further than 2-3 metres, while on the “Virtual Wreck Museum” website it is possible to see the whole wreck.
The NMM team behind the project has been nominated for the prestigious “TRAVLERY 2015” award given by “National Geographic” in the “Scientific Discovery of the Year” category for “Development and implementation of a novel method for underwater documentation of wrecks in 3D”.
