The film is set in an underwater research station located on the ocean floor, 11 km below the surface. The scientists inside must not only deal with the damage caused by the earthquake, but also with a group of beings that appeared at the same time…
The film is directed by 37-year-old William Eubank, while the script is written by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad. In the lead roles we will see Kristen Stewart and Vincent Cassel, i.e. a couple of experienced Hollywood stars, who will probably be the brightest points of the whole production. There’s no denying that apart from these two, the rest is a classic B-movie line-up.
So what can we expect? Reviews and audience ratings so far suggest that nothing special. On the other hand, this type of cinema is governed by its own laws and has a loyal group of fans. After all, the very classification of the production as a science fiction horror should allow us to adopt an appropriate attitude. An interesting and encouraging fact is that Underwater is the last film released by the 20th Century Fox studio before it changed its name.
The film is quite dark, claustrophobic and skips all that foreplay in the form of an introduction. In The Depths of Fear we are immediately immersed in the action and the authors try to maintain this state throughout. Unfortunately, they do not always succeed. If you like turning a blind eye to realism and can forgive various shortcomings, and if you find something interesting in productions verging on comic books and video games, you can easily spend 95 minutes of your life. After all, a score of 6.2 on IMDb is a pretty decent result.
However, I would like to warn you that the film, apart from some treats for seasoned connoisseurs of B-grade productions, also has a lot of weak points, the two biggest of which, in my opinion, are the lack of logic and the lack of an idea. I accept the wooden performance of the supporting actors as an inherent element of films in this category.
