Two Italian divers went missing last Saturday. Carlo Barbieri and Carlo Basso went missing while diving in a cave known as Dudú lagoon, near the town of Cabrera in the province of María Trinidad Sánchez, in the north-east of the country.

The Italians were last seen on Saturday afternoon, at the entrance to the cave. According to available information, they were said to have ignored certain safety procedures. The search, led by divers from the Dominican Republic Speleological Society (DRSS), has been ongoing since then.

The body of one of the missing Italians was found yesterday, 12 February. The search team speculates that the body of the other accident victim should be located somewhere nearby.

Now rescuers are waiting for the conditions in the cave to improve. Currently, visibility is very poor and the place where one of the divers was found is cramped and difficult to access.

The next dive is scheduled for Thursday, 14 February. This is when the divers intend to find the second victim of the accident and extract both bodies.
