The chest, which sank about 800 years ago, contained a scale, a set of small weights and more than 200 coins. In addition, several other merchant’s trinkets were unearthed. The chest settled on the rocky bottom and it took four men to bring it to the surface.

Museum experts described the find as ‘amazing’. The found coins have helped to determine the period they come from and the route their owner took between Tallinn in Estonia and Visby in Sweden.

A scale and a set of weights is the only such set that has survived to our times. It was used for trading silver and spices.

The whole was sent to the Historical Museum in Tallinn and will go on display next year.
