People who have chosen Malta as their diving holiday destination will have to pay a new tax. The authorities there have set a new levy on tourists called the Eco-Tax. This is due to the increased tourist traffic from Europe, after countries such as Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey lost popularity due to safety concerns.

The tax is effective from 20 June and amounts to 50 eurocents per person, per night spent in Malta. The maximum charge is set at €5, so if you spend time on this lovely island, you will pay for the first 10 nights. This may seem like a plus, but the reality is that most visitors to Malta spend around two weeks here, so it’s easy to calculate that you will pay for practically every day of your stay.

The new tax will be paid at the place of our accommodation. The new regulations impose such an obligation on hoteliers and persons engaged in accommodation rental.

Minors, i.e. those under the age of 18, are not subject to the tax, but to avoid paying it they will have to prove their age by showing their passport.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis told a press conference that the new tax would be used to improve tourism infrastructure and to develop and maintain tourist sites in the state’s care.

Representatives of the organisation of private entrepreneurs did not hide their irritation with the situation and pointed out that any changes in this matter should be consulted with them beforehand.
