According to information gathered, the vessel Odyssey Explorer appeared in the port of Limassol on Wednesday, December 17, and then on Thursday, December 18, was seen at the Xinhua location, which is the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus. The mere presence at the aforementioned location seemed very suspicious, so the authorities decided to intervene.

Upon boarding the vessel, police officers and the antiques and artwork service found 57 plastic containers containing several hundred artefacts. The containers with the objects picked up from the bottom were filled with a special solution to protect them from destruction. This is a standard process used when working with objects that have been exposed to salt water for a long time.

It is now expected to take several days to inspect, classify and photograph the found objects. Among the items identified as being of “considerable value” are medieval porcelain, china and everyday objects.
