Cypriot authorities have confirmed last year’s announcements and opened the sunken ancient port of Amathus from the late 4th and early 3rd centuries BC to divers.

In mid-August 2021. reported the latest underwater attractionthat the Cyprus authorities have prepared for 2022. It is the sunken ancient port of Amathus, which is located off the coast of the popular tourist city of Limassol. Now the underwater archaeological park is open to underwater tourists.

Ruins of a sunken port

Cyprus has opened its first underwater archaeological park on the ruins of one of the best-preserved ancient ports in the eastern Mediterranean. The submerged structures are the remains of the port of the ancient city-kingdom of Amathus. The entire structure was built between 312/311 BC and 294 BC. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history of the region with your own eyes and see fragments of ancient structures.

At the time, Cyprus was at the center of the conflict between Alexander the Great‘s two successors. Archaeologists speculate that due to its narrow entrance, it was probably a naval base. However, some indications suggest that it also served as a trading center.

Today, the ancient ruins are thriving, which is certainly an added attraction. The first underwater archaeological park in Cyprus, this is certainly a place worth visiting. You can have a pleasant time here, discovering history and admiring the marine ecosystem that has been built on ancient foundations.

ANDIKAT Programme

The Cyprus authorities have prepared a project to provide an underwater archaeological park under the ANDIKAT program of the European Regional Development Fund. The whole project is aimed at highlighting and promoting underwater archaeological and natural heritage. As part of the work, specialists have created diving trails in marine protected areas in Greece and Cyprus.
