Statues recovered from sunken city

Archaeologists have managed to unearth huge artefacts from a sunken city near Alexandria. Twelve years after the first traces of this magnificent find were encountered, we could see the giant statues of gods and pharaohs illuminated once again by the glow of the Egyptian sun.

The discovery, described by some as “the largest in the 21st century,” was made in 2001 by a group of divers led by Frenchman Franck Goddio. Interestingly, the expedition came across it completely by accident, while searching for a wreck from the Napoleonic times.

The city, which disappeared from the pages of history for 1,200 years, is slowly coming back to the surface to once again please human eyes. The archaeologists conducting the delicate process of conservation and excavation have already announced that the next step will be an exhibition of the collected artefacts.

Among the secured objects are the statue of the goddess Isis, the god Hapi and a statue of a so far unidentified pharaoh. What is most pleasing is the condition of the excavated treasures, which seem to do nothing about the passing of time.
