In the accompanying video, a group of divers stubbornly struggle against a fishing net to free whale sharks entangled in it. These beautiful fish – the largest that live in the world – are not dangerous to humans and their main food is plankton.
The sharks liberated by the divers were so grateful that immediately after being set free they were happily circling around their saviours.
Unfortunately, whale sharks are not the only unintentional stowaways that quite often get caught in nets. Whales, sharks, turtles or dolphins that end up on a fishing vessel by accident and cannot be sold are usually discarded. They usually do not survive the whole ‘adventure’.
Floating processing plants and predatory fishing seriously damage the marine ecosystem. This makes it all the more pleasant to see people who are not indifferent to the fate of aquatic creatures.
