At the end of November, the winners of the Miss Scuba International 2014 competition were announced, with US-based Tabitha Eleanor Lipkin taking the crown, beating 13 other candidates from around the world in the grand final. Miss Scuba is a series of beauty contests set in the diving world, where the winners of national editions meet at the final gala to compete for the main prize and the title of Miss Scuba International.

Originally from California, Lipkin is 24 years old and works as a reporter by day. As she stated, she has long been heavily involved in marine conservation and advocacy, as well as active recreation in the form of scuba diving. Entering the Miss Scuba contest was her first time competing in a beauty pageant.

“I have been working with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, where many projects are created and put into practice to protect the marine environment. They range from simple activities at sea to whale rescue. I consider winning this competition to be the opportunity of a lifetime. I will now be able to travel the world to promote the right attitudes and spread my love for the marine world and diving.”

Tabitha earned her first dive certification in 2010. And since then she has been encouraging other women to dive, develop and contribute to protecting the underwater world.

Just behind the Californian was Thailand’s representative Cattaleya Shulze. The 1st vice miss is 22 years old and works as a TV presenter and freelancer. The second vice miss title went to 23-year-old Irish girl Amber Ryan Marie Gamble, who also received the Miss Photogenic award.

Rounding out the final five were 24-year-old Malaysian Joanne Kimberly Majalap and her British Isles peer Michelle Katie Paraskeva, who also took the additional honour of Miss Talented.

The other honours awarded at the Miss Scuba International 2014 gala were won by Jeraldine Phneah of Singapore – Miss Environment, Allison Pelletier of Canada – Miss Dive Tourism and Rima Demensah of Indonesia Miss Kayan Outfit.
