Paul Allen died at the age of 65

On Monday, 15 October, Paul Allen passed away at the age of 65. The American entrepreneur and philanthropist, who co-founded the legendary Microsoft with Bill Gates, was one of the richest men in the world. In the last decade he became heavily involved in the search for shipwrecks of great importance to US history.

To this end, he gathered around his project a group of experts from various fields, who had at their disposal the research vessel R/V “Petrel”, equipped with top-of-the-range equipment to carry out wreck search missions.

Over the past few years, Allen’s team has logged a series of stunning discoveries. These include finding a wreck the Japanese super battleship “Musashi”lifting a ship’s bell from the legendary British vessel HMS “Hood”and the discovery of the final resting place the heavy cruiser USS “Indianapolis”The discovery of the final resting place of a ship whose sinking is considered the greatest tragedy of the US Navy.

In 2018 alone, the team working on the R/V “Petrel” discovered the wrecks of 3 vessels. In March, they located the wreck of the aircraft carrier USS “Lexington”, and shortly thereafter the wreck light cruiser USS “Juneau”, on board which 5 Sullivan brothers died. The third success was the finding in April of the remains of cruiser USS “Helena”.

In his many years as a philanthropist, Allen has donated $2 billion to protect the oceans, fight homelessness or advance scientific research.
