Within the framework of the project carried out by the Maritime Office in Gdynia – ‘Modernisation of the entrance to the inner harbour in Gdańsk, stage II – reconstruction of the waterway on the Martwa Wisła and Motława rivers’, wooden vessels dating back to the 18th century will be excavated from the area and sunk in the sea. Marinex is responsible for the entire project.

The project, co-funded by the European Union, will cost a total of €275m and aims to excavate and preserve historical wrecks located in the Martwa Wisła river area which is undergoing modernisation and dredging. The excavated remains will be transported on pontoons.

After examination, in order to protect the wrecks from destruction, they will be deposited on the bottom in a specially designated area of the bay as an underwater museum. Apart from the undoubted benefits for the development of Polish diving, Polish science will also benefit from this situation.

Thanks to the research, historians and archaeologists will be able to deepen their knowledge of vessels that sailed on the Martwa Wisła in past centuries. This will result in detailed documentation and reconstruction of the construction of some of them.

For us, it only remains to wait for the possibility to admire the effects of the works, as they will feed the underwater museum created in the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk. Already now, apart from the wreck of the Swedish ship Solen, there is a part of the cannons excavated and transported from the Słupsk shoal during the “Wiatrem Gnane” expedition
