For some time now, Egypt has been standing for diving records. Recently we reported on the successful completion of the longest dive in the sea, and today, out of chronicler’s duty, we add another feat, which took place on Friday, June 5, 2015. It was then that the event planned by Ahmed Gabr, gathered 614 divers underwater at the same time!

Apart from the sheer number, which is, after all, impressive, as well as breaking the world record, it was about something more. The organisers of the whole action used the opportunity to carry out a mass cleaning of the waters surrounding the famous resort and the place of many diving trips – Hurghada. Additionally, all the time attention was drawn to the constantly deteriorating condition of the waters of the Red Sea and the terrible degradation of the local fauna and flora.

The face, initiator and promoter of this unusual event was none other than Egypt’s most famous diver and holder of the record for the deepest open water dive – Ahmed Gabr. Using his previous success, he decided to gather around him 400 divers and set off together to clean up the waters of Hurghada. As you can see, the glow of newly won glory and marketing efforts, allowed to significantly exceed the organizational intentions and in the end 614 enthusiasts of underwater adventures went under the water.

As Ahmed says, the time for payment has come. It is, of course, about paying back the best for all life in the Red Sea. The place, which has inspired countless things from tourists visiting Egypt, is now in a deplorable state and needs help. The joint clean-up is just one gesture, but the most important thing was to draw attention to the problem itself and the need for action, so that we can save the rich and diverse life in the surrounding waters.
