Employees of the Swedish Maritime Administration Agency came across an unknown wreck while working. The researchers were taking surveys in the North Kvarken Strait, which is part of the Gulf of Bothnia. At one point, a mysterious wreck of a large ship appeared on the sonar, which rests on the bottom between the Swedish and Finnish coasts.
We do not know anything about this wreck. To be honest, we are very surprised. – said Carl-Johan Linde, spokesman for the Swedish Maritime Administration Agency.
The mysterious wreck that the Swedes have located is of quite considerable size. The vessel measures 74 metres in length and rests on the bottom set flush on its keel. In the place where the researchers found the wreck, the depth is about 35 metres. In turn, the wreck itself, according to measurements made by the Swedes, is about 9 metres high.
Workers from the Swedish Maritime Administration discovered the wreck three weeks ago. They made the discovery by pure chance while carrying out survey work in the Baltic Sea in the Gulf of Bothnia. The discovered mysterious wreck of a large ship is located in the high seas, south of the island of Holmön near the city of Umeå.
We do not yet have any information on when and under what circumstances this ship sank. During the work we do at sea, we often come across various shipwrecks. However, we are usually aware of their existence and often have detailed documentation of them. However, in this case we have not yet been able to identify the found vessel. – Carl-Johan Linde told the media.
Based on 3D images taken with sonar, several facts have been established. It is known that the wreck belongs to a fairly modern vessel with a metal hull. As a whole it is in fairly good condition and probably sank in the first half of the 20th century.
My guess is that it was a cargo ship that was on its way to Hölmön. Based on its location I think it was coming from the sea towards the fairway to Umeå. I hope that someone will find more information about it and give us some clue so that we can find out what the ship is. – said David Sten, captain of the maritime administration ship.
It is not known at this time what further action officials will take with regard to of the found wreck.
