“Mysteries of the Baltic Wrecks” – episode 2 SS “Bremerhaven” – premiere

Tonight, at 10.40 pm, the second episode of a new documentary series “Mysteries of the Baltic Wrecks” will premiere on the Canal+ Discovery channel. This time, together with the characters in the series, we will focus on the unusually dark wreck of the SS “Bremerhaven”, which has earned itself the reputation of an unusually unlucky vessel…

[blockquote style=”2″] [Read more…] “Built and launched in Belfast, where the famous Titanic was, it brings death to its passengers from the start. Eventually it becomes a forced labour camp located in Police, where it continues to take its death toll. Was it really a “floating concentration camp”? We will look for the answer to this question from people directly affected by the events at Bremerhaven – former prisoners and their families, including the grandmother of Łukasz Piórewicz, a diver from Tomek Stachura’s team. Łukasz is very keen to see the place from which his great-grandfather returned home in a very serious condition after many years of forced labour. Will the shipwreck allow him to do so? What will happen to the divers during this risky expedition? Will bad luck never leave Bremerhaven?”[/blockquote]

During its three years of operation as a concentration camp, Bremerhaven became infamous as a place where 5-10 people a day lost their lives in inhuman conditions. The first victim of the camp was Stanisław Wasilewski. He was beaten for not understanding an order that was given to him in German… To save himself he jumped overboard. A moment later he was shot by camp guards.

In 1943, due to too high mortality rate, a large number of escapes and the needs of the Kriegsmarine that was taking more and more losses, the camp was liquidated. The ship was sent to a repair shipyard in Szczecin, where, after initial extermination and disinfection with Cyclone B, she was adapted for sailing again.

The series premieres on the Canal+ Discovery channel and via the nc+go app.
