Missile arsenal recovered from lake

Divers of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla respond to reports of unexploded ordnance throughout Poland. On 4-5 June, the Group of Divers from the 12th minesweeper Squadron took part in an operation to remove a huge arsenal on Lake Ciemne near Torzym (Lubuskie Voivodeship).

It was one of the largest finds in recent years in the Lubusz region. In total, divers excavated nearly 1700 pieces of missiles from the lake. These were mainly German 80 mm calibre shells abandoned after World War II and a few pieces of Soviet Katyusha type rockets.

In addition to specialists from the underwater tasks of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla, a total of four Sappers’ Patrols took part in the coordinated action to collect explosive and dangerous objects on Lake Ciemne. Sappers from Krosno Odrzańskie, Bolesławiec and Głogów, among others, continuously removed unexploded ordnance by divers for several days.

The whole of Poland is divided into two regions of responsibility for Mines Divers Groups in terms of supporting Land Divers Patrols in taking up explosive and dangerous objects found in inland waters, rivers, lakes and other water reservoirs. The 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla from Świnoujście has within its structures two Groups of Divers Miners dedicated to such tasks. The first is part of the 12th minesweeper Squadron from Świnoujście, while the second group is stationed in Gdynia at the 13th minesweeper Squadron.
