In Baja, Lower California, Mexico, a Mexican navy ship was sunk on 21 November, creating the first artificial reef in the region. The foundation has thus been laid for the development of this type of project, which is working well in its immediate neighbour to the north, the USA.

The choice fell on the old patrol vessel Uribe 121, which was sunk near Rosario, about 30 miles from the southern border of the USA, which will probably also encourage divers from San Diego and the surrounding area to visit. The whole project was prepared and carried out over the last 8 years!

The aim of the actions taken was, of course, to start creating a place attractive for diving-oriented tourists and to create better conditions for the development of local fauna and flora. Similar activities are known around the world and the positive effects that can be observed encourage others to replicate the proven patterns. Representatives of local businesses, seeing in the project hope for the development of the region, supported the activities with the amount of $600 thousand.

The sinking of the ship was quite an event. In addition to State Governor Francisco Vega de Lamadrida, Mexican Navy Admiral Victor Uribe Arevalo also appeared, as well as hundreds of onlookers gathered on Rosario Beach to watch the vessel’s final moments on the surface.

The artificial reef was located on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 30 metres. Now it only remains to wait until marine nature accepts and settles the new attraction, which will certainly be visited by diving enthusiasts soon.
