On Saturday, 25 February 2012 the third edition of the Wreck Festival in Lodz will take place. Among the speakers there is no shortage of names known as the diving world long and wide. One of the main points of the evening will be the speech of the world famous diver and underwater photographer – Leigh Bishop. Below, we present the issues that he will raise during his presentations.
Pristine wrecks
In this talk, Leigh will share his experience, gained over the 15+ years he has been researching and exploring over 400 wrecks. This will be accompanied by a powerful dose of unique photography. Bishop will return to his roots here, talking about his beginnings in the discovery, exploration and identification of wrecks, around the UK. Listeners will learn how this type of diving (including dive equipment and survey methods) has developed and evolved over the last decade and a half. An absolute ‘must see’ for any fan of wreck diving.
Deep wrecks in Irish waters
It is thought that more transatlantic liners lie on the seabed in Irish waters than anywhere else in the world. The lion’s share of them were sunk during the First and Second World Wars. Although they were pushed very deep under the water, they never fell out of the orbit of interest of Irish and English divers. On the contrary, inaccessible, hidden deep in the cold murky waters, they fired the imagination of divers even more strongly. Depth, however, is not the only problem facing the daredevils who take up the challenge. Local water movements and strong currents are a very big danger. Leigh Bishop will guide us through the explorations that the “Dark Star” group undertook on wrecked vessels:
Tuscania
Transylvania
Andania
Justicia
Amazon
Then, the author will present the effects of searches for other transatlantic ships sunken in this area. Again, the whole presentation will be supported by rich photographic and film material, covering the wreck dives themselves, as well as their effects (including excavated objects, which are now exhibits in many museums).
On behalf of the organisers and ourselves, we encourage you to come to Lodz on 25 February. Apart from great fun and many interesting guests, the Wreck Festival will once again support Lodz Hospice for Children. We can all help!
