The programme of Kolosy is filled with lectures about bicycle expeditions around the world, exploration of tropical caves, crossing inaccessible glaciers, conquering eight-thousanders and travelling as a way of life. Captain Jerzy Radomski will give a very interesting lecture on the longest voyage in the history of Polish sailing. Within 32 years, he covered 240,000 nautical miles on his yacht.
We are most interested in the lecture ‘Riders on the Storm: an underwater traverse of the Irish lowlands’. It will tell the story of Artur Kozlowski’s ambitious project to find a link between the Polltoophill caves in Castletown and Polldeelin caves in Kiltartan on the Gort Plain in County Galway, Ireland. Deep underground, it hosts one of the most interesting and potentially one of the largest underwater cave systems in Europe. In early 2008, Artur Kozłowski began exploring his part of it, the underground section of the Coole River. For over two years he went underwater 45 times. Two floods in County Galway at that time almost destroyed his work, but he persevered with subsequent dives, repairing the guard rails destroyed by the elements. Finally, in August 2010, after 120 hours underwater and exploring 2.6 kilometres of corridors at a maximum depth of 62 metres, the connection was made. The length of the traverse between the sinkhole and the spring was 2.4 km. The presentation will be accompanied by a film made by Waldemar Furmaniak.
The event will also be graced by the visit of many distinguished special guests. Among them may be mentioned: Piotr Pustelnik, conqueror of the Himalayan crown, Marek Kamiński, renowned polar explorer, Jan Gać, historian and researcher of pre-Columbian cultures, Max Cegielski, writer and reporter, author of excellent books on India, Pakistan and Turkey, and Jerzy Adamuszek, author of several feats entered in the Guinness Book of Records.
The event will take place in the modern Sports and Entertainment Hall at Kazimierza Górskiego Street in Gdynia. Lectures will be held in the main hall, which can seat up to 3200 people, and in the seminar hall. The event will also include an outdoor clothing fair and a Travel Media Salon.
