So far, researchers have managed to take some photographs of the vessel, but there has been no clear information on its origin. The only thing that has been established is that it is the wreck of a 76-metre vessel, model 600-13, of the Whiskey type.

Speculation about the origin of the vessel has intensified following statements made by a retired general, a former commander of the Swedish armed forces. He said it was the wreck of a Polish ship, one of two that were sunk by the Swedes in the 1980s.

Poland received and operated 4 submarines of this type from the USSR, but none of them ever sank. The last Polish submarine to be lost without a trace was ORP Orzeł. The ship was lost during World War II.

Unexpectedly, the solution to the mystery emerged in Denmark. It turned out that the ship’s owner was a Danish businessman who had bought five such vessels from the Russians. They were intended to be scrapped, but during transport one of them broke free from its tow near Gotland and sank. The Danes did not want to salvage the ship, so they abandoned it without informing anyone about it.
