Last year saw the first edition of a very interesting and original initiative taken by divers from the Giżycko diving club “Płetwal”, based in the capital of the Land of the Great Lakes. The participants and organisers liked the action so much that this year, they decided to take up the gauntlet once again.
On 31 October, all those willing will come to Giżycko to enter the water after dark and swim across the Łuczański Canal, which is one mile long. Apart from standard diving equipment, everyone will be equipped with a raft made of polystyrene foam, on which they will tow behind them a hand-carved Halloween pumpkin!
While some may have doubts about the description above, I guarantee you that the sight of the illuminated pumpkins covering the length of the canal makes a fantastic impression.
The event is non-commercial and was organised for several reasons. In addition to being a great way to integrate and activate the diving community in the area, the participating divers make no secret that it is also a great opportunity to commemorate divers and loved ones who are unfortunately no longer with us.
If you feel like trying something new, feel invited to Giżycko. All those who would like to join and take part in the 2nd Mazurian Night Mile can find more information about the event and contact details of the organisers at official website of the Scuba Diving Club “Płetwal”.
“On Friday 31.10.2014 at 18.00 for the second time we meet at the tank bridge over the Luczanski Canal. As last year we invite all divers and other water lovers to participate.
Participants should have with them: a source of light (min. 90 min. of lighting), a compass, a slab of polystyrene and a hollowed-out pumpkin a, la Halloween prepared to be mounted on the polystyrene with a possibility to light a candle or a torch inside. We sail the Mazurian Mile (the length of K.Łuczański) at night (after dusk), pulling behind us luminous pumpkins on styrofoam. Of course, we try to swim underwater… After the dive, we share a candle with our friends.
Those wishing to take part in the event are asked to let us know if they want a commemorative T-shirt. At the moment the price of a T-shirt is about 25 PLN. We may be able to find a sponsor.
