History Stop: ORP “Orzeł” Symposium – searching for the wreck
Listen to this article

Another year of searching for the wreck of the most famous Polish submarine ORP “Orzeł” is behind us. In recent years, the Santi Finding Eagle team has been conducting an intensified and systematic search for the vessel, each time narrowing down the area where the “Eagle” may be found. Each expedition they undertake brings us closer to the moment when we will be able to learn the truth about the legendary submarine of the Polish Navy.

Members of the Santi Expedition to Find the Eagle will appear at the symposium ORP “Orzeł” – the search for the wreck, which will be held on Tuesday 24 September 2019 at the IPN Educational Centre, in the Raczynski Library building, in Poznań at 19 Wolności Square, Athanasius Gallery (entrance from Karol Marcinkowski Avenue). The start of the meeting is scheduled for 14.00.

The team

The search for ORP “Orzeł” is something that fires the imagination and arouses everyone’s interest. The history of the Polish ship and the incredible fate of its heroic crew, as well as daring actions showing the courage, craftsmanship and superb training of its sailors, have won them the appreciation and love of the whole nation.

Tomasz Stachura, Benedykt Hac and Piotr Michalik will present the results of the search for the wreck of the legendary Polish submarine, which has been lying at the bottom of the North Sea since spring 1940. The circumstances of the loss of the vessel by the Polish Navy have not been explained to this day. The surviving sources give rise to various hypotheses as to the causes of the sinking. These, in turn, are being verified in the depths of the sea using modern technical equipment.
