Unusual fish caught in Norway

The unusual catch was made by Norwegian fisherman Oscar Lundhal, who managed to pull out of the water a fish that looked like a creature from another planet. After all, it’s not every day that you come across a creature with disproportionately large bulging eyes that looks more like an alien than an inhabitant of the watery depths.

Recalling the whole situation, 19-year-old Oscar Lundahl said he nearly “jumped off his boat” when he saw what he had managed to pull on board.

“We were looking for blue halibut, which is quite a rare species. We decided to try about five miles offshore. I had four hooks set on one line and all of a sudden I felt something quite large get caught on it. It took me about 30 minutes to catch the fish as I had about 800 metres of line to reel in.”

The fish has been classified as an American Chimera(Hydrolagus colliei), related to sharks, whose ancestry is said to date back 300 million years! Chimeras live in deep water and are found extremely rarely.
