Wanting to visit the underwater museum we will have to reach the beautiful islands of Alonissos and Peristera. It is here, in the waters of the Aegean Sea, that this unusual attraction awaits us. Exciting diving On an ancient wreck full of sunken artifacts from thousands of years ago.
Diving enthusiasts and freedivers will be able to visit, accompanied by a guide, the famous 5th century BC shipwreck, full of amphorae and various artefacts!
I must admit that the whole thing promises to be amazing. Where else will you have the chance to commune underwater with a past that stretches back 2,500 years? Visitors to the diving museum will see with their own eyes the submerged remains of a civilisation that once inhabited modern Greece.
The ancient shipwreck from 495 B.C. in question was discovered near the rocky western coast of the island of Peristeri in 1985. As is very often the case, the amazing and extremely valuable underwater find was the work of… a local fisherman. The wreck is located at a depth of 28 metres, and according to available knowledge, the ship probably came here from Athens.
The holds of the wreck are filled with thousands of amphorae once containing wine from the ancient city of Mendi, located on the Chalcidian peninsula, and from Peparithos, or present-day Skopelos. These areas have always been famous for their wine production. The shipwreck is one of the most important dating from the classical period (5th-4th century BC).
The huge number of amphorae on the bottom, the excellent condition of the wreck resting at a depth of 21-28 metres and the beautiful waters of the Aegean Sea are certainly more than enough reasons to decide to visit and dive here.
Both the scuba museum and the whole region are located in the protected area of the Alonissos Marine National Park – Northern Sporades. The mysterious world hidden at the bottom of the sea is available to diving enthusiasts, but also to all tourists visiting Alonissos. No need to enter the water!
Among the charming streets of the town Alonissos you will find the Public Information Centre waiting for tourists. Here we will find all the detailed information about the submerged ancient past of the region. We will also have the opportunity to take a virtual walk to the bottom to have a look at everything thanks to virtual reality.
As announced, the part made available in August is only the beginning implementation of a larger project. The local authorities hope that by offering more wrecks to tourists, they will make the whole of Greece an even more popular diving and tourist destination.
We hope that in some time we will be able to give our readers a full account of the dive in this remarkable underwater museum.
