In the past few days, we have reported on the launch of Suunto’s new dive computer, the EON Core. We also promised that we would soon report how the device performs under water. Courtesy of Techniki Podwodna – representative of the Finnish brand on the Polish market, we could almost immediately get down to testing.

Already at the first moment underwater, the very clear and legible indications on the OLED display are striking. Perhaps this is why it caught the eye, as the display itself is not the largest size and this was a slight surprise.

Also doing a great job are the large buttons for operating the computer menu. Both in a dry glove and in a 5mm thick neoprene glove, using the device did not cause the slightest problem.

As for the operation itself, it is very intuitive and even if you are using the computer for the first time, you will have no problem navigating between the different functions. You do not have to pay much attention to the computer, so you remain focused on diving. Clearly a plus.

The EON Core also features an electronic compass. As with the other indications, the new Suunto model is also very clear in this element and has no problems with operation. This is yet another device that offers a really high-end compass. Could it be that the twilight of analogue compasses is coming? Interesting, considering that the Suunto SK-7 and SK-8 are the market leaders.

We had the opportunity to test the Suunto computer in combination with both a dry suit and a wet suit. In both cases, the strap of the device allowed us to wear it without any problems. Seems obvious, but trust me, I know from experience that not for all manufacturers…

The EON Core is a versatile computer that will work well for both recreational and technical diving. Therefore, trimix divers will definitely not be disappointed. The device supports a number of gases, and, thanks to transmitters, can operate 10 cylinders at the same time. The overall picture is spoilt by the operating range of the computer, which is “only” 80 metres.
