The aim of the expedition “The greatest connection: Sac Actun – Dos Ojos” is the exploration of two powerful cave systems on the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico: Sac Actun and Dos Ojos. For more than twenty years, many prominent cave divers have tried to find a natural connection between the underground passages, but none have succeeded so far. This is a great challenge in cave diving exploration. The extreme sections of the Sac Actun (270 km long) and Dos Ojos (79 km long) systems are located only a few hundred metres from each other. If a natural underwater connection could be found between them, it would create the largest fully flooded cave system in the world, with a total corridor length of almost 350 kilometres.
Krzysztof Starnawski has been searching for the Sac Actun-Dos Ojos connection for nine years. During this time, he has discovered and charted more than 450 metres of new corridors, and now he has only a dozen or so metres left of the most technically difficult section. Each time he stays underwater for at least seven hours, swimming long stretches, squeezing through very narrow terminals, discovering places where no man has ever gone before.
Starnawski is the world record holder in closed circuit cave diving (Viroit cave, Albania, – 278 m), world record holder in closed circuit deep diving (Blue Abyss, Egypt, -283 m), discoverer of the deepest flooded cave in the world (Hranicka Propast, Czech Republic, – 404 m). He has also made many other groundbreaking and remarkable discoveries in caves around the world. The previous successes of this outstanding diver, his experience, passion as an explorer and his hard work and determination allow us to believe that he will also achieve this goal.
Immediately after the meeting, at 20.00 in the club Piwnica Pod Baranami, there will be an opening of the exhibition of photographs by Krzysztof Starnawski. After the official part (about 10 minutes) it will be possible to have individual conversations with the author. The exhibition will run until 15 November 2017.
Start of the conference: 19.00, end: 20.00.
