Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanijii’s sculpture “Untitled (overturned tea house with coffee machine)” is a pavilion for one or two people, which can be used as a place to drink tea or coffee, but also as a shelter from the rain. Constructed from cheap materials, the cube with a steel surface reflecting the lawn and surrounding trees resembles a vehicle from an old sci-fi film, landing unexpectedly in Bródno. The object is an invitation to meet the neighbours as well as to use the artwork creatively or even to negate it as an object of aesthetic contemplation. In 2010, the original tea house returned to Germany, replaced by a replica designed by Paweł Althamer (accepted by Tiravanija), which often hosts an improvised park café run by local residents.

Inaugurated in June 2009, the Bródno Sculpture Park was conceived as a long-term project, involving artists, neighbourhood residents, local government officials and the art institution the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. It very quickly became one of the most recognisable spaces for public art in this part of Europe. This park, located in the Bródno housing estate in the Targówek district, so far rarely visited by tourists and art enthusiasts, is a unique example of a local initiative. It refers to various traditions of art functioning outside gallery and museum space. It tests the formula of “social sculpture” and sculpture in public space in general. Each of the works presented in Bródno Park is different in character, durability, style and the level of “functionality”.
