The wreck of the USS Mohawk is another vessel that has been turned into an art gallery thanks to a project by Andreas Franke. What distinguishes the works of the Austrian photographer is the fact that he combines in his works photographs taken on the wreck (on which they are later exhibited) and figures added by computer.
Previously, similar “exhibitions” were organised by Franke on the wrecks of the USS Hoyte S. Vandenberg and SS Stavronikita. Now it’s the turn of a historic US Navy vessel, which has been given new life as an artificial reef in Florida.
The exhibition will run until 15 September 2013, so if any of our readers are travelling to Florida, they should include this attraction in their schedule.
The large-format photographs have been placed in steel frames and separated from the water by plexiglass. As they are displayed on the wreck, they will gain even more charm over time as they gradually become covered with the marine life that flourishes so exuberantly in Florida’s waters.
You can read more about the sinking of the USS Mohawk in material from our archives.
