One of the most recognised freedivers, Frenchman Guillaume Néry has decided to end his sporting career. The situation is certainly related to the events during the recent World Championships in Cyprus, where the carelessness of the organisers almost led to a tragedy. Fortunately, there was only fear and Guillaume emerged from the situation unscathed.

Arguably, the plunge on 10 September 2015, when Néry set off for a world record of 129m (previous record 128m) and what happened as a result of a mistake by the organiser, was a very compelling argument for the Frenchman to end his career.

It is about the famous case where the depth was wrongly marked and instead of placing the marker at the declared 129 metres, it was placed at a depth 10 metres more! While a distance of 10 metres is not a big deal, considering the depth at which the mistake took place, everything could have ended tragically, including the worst possible scenario.

Néry descended to a depth of 139m, took his depth marker and began his ascent. Unfortunately, he did not reach the surface and at a depth of about 10m he suffered a blackout, or simply fainted. The situation was brought under control by the safety team, who pulled the freediver to the surface, where he regained consciousness after a few minutes.

As far as we know, Guillaume Néry does not intend to give up freediving as such, but only its professional part and competitions. This means that we can still hope for more sensational films featuring the Frenchman.
