Irish freediver Stephen Keenan has died during a dive at the famous Blue Hole in Dahab. According to DeeperBlue, the incident occurred during a dive in which the Irishman was acting as safety support.

The details of the whole incident are still unknown. From the information that can be found in the media so far, Keenan was securing the plunge of a freediver who was planning to swim under the famous rock arch “The Arch”. While securing the attempt, 39-year-old Stephan Keenan had a so-called blackout (loss of consciousness), following which he drowned.

“The Arch” is one of the most famous sites in Dahab. Measuring 26 metres, the tunnel is located at a depth of 56 metres and is a frequently visited site by divers and freedivers coming to Egypt.

Stephen Keenan has been involved in freediving since 2009. In Dahab, he was co-owner of “Dahab Freedivers” and also acted as head of security on many freediver dives from around the world. He has also worked as an instructor trainer for AIDA, PADI and conducted EFR training for instructors. He has trained hundreds of divers and freedivers in Dahab, Spain and the Philippines.

Run jointly with Pascal Berger and Miguel Lozano, the “Dahab Freedivers” school was one of the fastest growing in the world.

Keenan has amassed a number of Irish national records in freediving during his competitive career.

He was best known in the community for his role as head of security at the highly prestigious Vertical Blue freediving competition, as well as other top events around the world.
