First underwater tablet with touch screen, WiFi and GPS – video

If you’re a gadget and technology geek, you’ll be interested in Finnish startup Alltab. A group of divers decided to team up and use their knowledge and skills to create the first underwater tablet with a touch screen and GPS navigation!

The standard version of the device we will have at our disposal is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, but there is no problem at all to request another model if this one does not meet our expectations. The tablet itself is not the most important thing here. It is important that the unit we choose meets the basic criteria so that it can connect underwater, for example with a GoPro camera using WiFi or Bluetooth.

The manufacturer makes no secret that it is ultimately interested in selling its devices to the uniformed services and professional diving market. All because of the potential and possibilities that the Alltab offers in terms of data collection and underwater communication.

This, of course, does not preclude the device from functioning in recreational or technical diving. Especially if we take into account that there are two versions of the device available. The first allowing you to use it to a depth of 90 metres and the second, which has a limit of 150 metres. Surely many people will be interested in the fact that the Alltab can be operated both with the bare hand and through a glove.

[blockquote style=”2″]”Uniformed services are very excited about the possibilities the device offers for GPS navigation. Scientists and deep sea researchers, on the other hand, are more attentive to the huge potential when it comes to collecting all sorts of data,” emphasises Jouni Leinikki, CEO of Alleco[/blockquote].

In order for the device to function underwater, a special pressure adjustment system had to be developed. Alltab uses its own patented technology for this purpose.

As for WiFi, the waves can only penetrate a few centimetres through the water, so it was necessary to create and use a system of antennas, connected by a special cable. This allows the range to be extended to tens of metres, while maintaining decent signal quality.

All that remains for us to do is to wait and closely follow the Alltab’s development. If the device is as good as its creators claim, it will certainly appear in all branches of diving in the coming years, because the potential is indeed huge, and the environment itself has been waiting for a similar breakthrough for a long time.
