Last weekend saw the conclusion of the CMAS European Freediving Championships, which took place off the coast of Kas in Turkey from 3-10 October. Four individual depth competitions were held there: CWT Monofin (Constant weight in mono fins), CNF (Constant weight without fins), CWT Bi-Fins (Constant weight in fins scissor technique) and Jump Blue (Dynamics at a depth of 10m around a 15m square).

As many as 7 CMAS world records were set during the Championships. New records were set by:

CMAS competitions and records are independent of AIDA records and currently in all identical competitions they are lower (read shallower) in CMAS. However, this competition brings with it another extraordinary event – for the first time in freediving history, coverage of the competition was streamed live online on the Olympic Committee portal.

What’s more, this coverage is also now available to watch on the Olympic Channel website

The Diveye team, that is Michał Biskup and his underwater drone operators, are responsible for the live broadcast straight from the depths. It is remarkable that all the scenes from under the water can be watched directly on Diveye’s website live or replayed at any later time.

However, we will not see the Polish flag in any of the reports. Polish competitors are not allowed to take part in freediving competitions organised by CMAS. The reason seems to be trivial – Polish Diving Association, which is a representative of the CMAS world organization in Poland, has not taken freediving under its wing and our competitors cannot obtain a start licence.

Interestingly, apart from underwater sports such as fin-swimming and underwater hockey, also spearfishing has been accepted as a Polish representative of CMAS underwater sports, while freediving, despite the many successes of our competitors, is still not.

However, we hope that this state of affairs will change and Polish freedivers will have an open road to events like this one and we will also be able to watch them on the Olympic Channel in the future.
