According to information coming from the scene of the accident, a diving team of three people arrived at the Garda on Wednesday, near Benaco. The aim was to carry out a dive to a depth of 275 metres and to beat the record recently set by Luca Pedrali of 264 metres.
The dive started around 8.00am, in the area of the porto di Tremosine. The first sign that something had gone wrong came after 50 minutes, when the diver failed to turn up at the place where he had the cylinders deposited.
At this point his colleagues alerted the emergency services. Volunteer rescuers from Tremosine, carabinieri from Limone and firefighters from Salo arrived on the scene. The waters were patrolled by the Salo coastguard. The search for the missing Pole was ongoing. At 16.00, an ROV-type robot also went into action.
At 19.00 it was the ROV robot that located the body of the 38-year-old diver at a depth of 230 metres. The device also allowed the body of the Polish diver to be recovered. Italian experts will now try to establish the causes of the accident.
Wacław Lejko set the uniformed services record twice this year. First by descending to a depth of 233 metres and then to a depth of 249 metres.
