This horrific discovery was made by Cagn Anderson, who spotted the dead sharks during roadworks and recorded everything with his phone’s camera. He counted a total of 36 dead juvenile hammerhead sharks scattered along the rocky coastline.
The fish carcasses discovered measured up to a metre in length, although most were much smaller. The sharks ranged in age from 6 months to 2 years. Suspicion fell on the fishermen, who probably grabbed the sharks by accident and threw them back into the sea before the tide swept them ashore.
The common hammerhead, Sphyrna zygaena, otherwise known as the hammerhead shark, is usually found in New Zealand coastal waters at depths of up to 110 metres, mainly around North Island.
New Zealand authorities are looking into the incident to determine the causes and whether it is an isolated incident.
