The British SS “Maidan” is a large steam-powered transport ship, which sank in the waters of the Red Sea. Due to the enormous depth at which the wreck rests, it is a very difficult object for divers to explore. The authors of the film from the dive on this vessel deserve all the more praise.

On 21 May 1923 the SS “Maidan” set sail from Calcutta for her homeland, calling at ports in Ceylon, Bombay and Port Sudan on the way. June 9 was unlucky from the start. Sailing on a course north of Port Sudan, the crew of the carrier had navigation problems which resulted in a collision with a reef off Rocky Island.

The ship’s captain, Nicholas Breen, fought fiercely and manoeuvred the ship to the end, avoiding loss of life. The majority of the crew and passengers immediately left the ship, while the captain, assisted by several crewmen, remained at the post. When all hope of saving the SS Maidan was lost, the rest of the crew also disembarked.

The wreck was found in 2003. Its location at a depth of 80-120 metres was determined by Grant Searancke and Kimmo Hagman. The state of preservation of the wreck, which is more than 150 metres deep, is estimated to be almost perfect. Such an inaccessible location certainly contributes to this.

However, there are daredevils for whom such an expedition is simply an irresistible challenge. The films were shot during the expedition in 2013.
