Byron Bay dive instructor Inaki Aizpun risked his life to save a frightened shark. The incident took place off the coast of New South Wales. For his action, the diver received the ”Hero to Animals Award” from PETA. Had it not been for his intervention, the two-metre-long shark would have met a painful and certain death.

Inaki Aizpun was just diving with a group of people when he spotted a sand tawrosh in need of help. Upon closer inspection, wanting to determine what the problem was, he saw a rope and net hooked into the animal’s mouth.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I had to swim very carefully up to the shark to see if there was also a hook in its mouth. Fortunately, it turned out not to be. I was then able to pull the line to detach the piece of fishing net caught in its mouth. Unfortunately, even such a small fragment poses a serious threat to the inhabitants of the deep sea.” – Inaki Aizpun told the media[/blockquote].

An instructor from Byron Bay is now being described as a ‘hero’ because, at the risk of his own life, he decided to act and save a shark in need of help. However, the man himself points out that in the first instance, it is important to exercise caution and always keep yourself and your partner safe.

Aizpun says the shark understood that the diver was trying to help him and therefore did not attack him.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I think the shark felt that I was trying to help him. Not for a moment did he behave aggressively towards me or try to attack. We were able to establish a rapport and we worked together to solve the problem. After being freed, the shark swam away, only to return a moment later and disappear again for good.” – reported the diver[/blockquote].
