Not long ago, we wrote about a Russian diver caught smuggling cigarettes from the Kaliningrad region into Lithuania. As it turns out, underwater smuggling is flourishing all over the world. Today, we have received information about a Canadian diver who tried to smuggle a cargo of pot into the USA.

US Border Patrol agents have foiled an attempt to smuggle marijuana near Marine City, Michigan. According to the English-language media, the arrest is not the result of a great performance by the border service, but of information that was given to the police by an anonymous person.

A Canadian man was arrested in full dive gear as he tried to cross the St Clair River into the US. Federal agents found nearly 4kg of pot on him, which he was trying to smuggle in a specially prepared PVC pipe. The unlucky smuggler was in the sights of law enforcement as soon as he arrived on the riverbank and it was only a matter of time before he was apprehended.

As this is yet another case tying smuggling and diving together in a short period of time, it might seem that this is a fairly common and tried and tested idea for bringing contraband across the border. However, according to US Border Patrol spokesman Kris Grogan, this is the first such case the federal authorities are dealing with.

According to law enforcement officers, the route taken by the smuggler is dangerous and the whole affair could have ended differently. The river in this place is over 1km wide and its current is very strong. If not for modern equipment in the form of night-vision cameras, the diver crossing the river at night could have crossed it unnoticed despite the presence of uniformed officers preparing a manhunt.
