Members of the search company ‘Booty Salvage’ were exploring a 17th century wreck less than 150m offshore, at a depth of just 5m. During their work they came across a find which turned out to be gold Spanish coins and necklaces.

According to a preliminary examination, the artefacts have spent almost 300 years at the bottom! It was in 1715 that a huge hurricane put the fleet of Spanish ships to a deadly test. As a result of the elemental attack, more than 1000 people died and 11 ships landed on the bottom! The bottom was literally covered with valuables bound for the Iberian Peninsula. Among them were 4 gold chains 5 coins and a gold ring found by the Booty Salvage family

For a group of young explorers it was the first such big find. As they say, finding valuable treasure makes them very happy, but the desire to get rich is not their priority during the search. They are much more attracted to the story behind their search.

“It’s an amazing feeling to come across items that were at the bottom of the ocean 150 years before the Civil War! It’s a great feeling to come across an item that connects you to the people who set out to conquer the New World. This success will definitely help motivate us to keep going, because we don’t intend to change a thing.” – said Eric Schmitt, member of Booty Salvage

The most fortunate, however, remain the authorities of the State of Florida, who are due 20% of the find. The Schmitt family and the lessee of the wreck will share the remainder.
